Driving Licence Requirements for Car Rental in Paros

Before booking a car in Paros with a foreign driving licence, check two separate requirements: whether your licence is recognised for driving the intended vehicle in Greece, and whether you meet the rental company’s conditions. AMR Paros Car Rentals publishes its own driver requirements. Confirm them before paying, particularly if your licence was issued outside the European Union.

The issuing country, vehicle category, restrictions and expiry date matter. Your nationality alone does not establish which documents you need. A valid national licence, an International Driving Permit and a rental confirmation also serve different purposes; one should not be assumed to replace the others.

Start with the licence you actually hold

  • Check the country and authority that issued it.
  • Check that its vehicle category and any restrictions match the car you intend to drive.
  • Make sure it remains valid for the entire rental period.
  • Identify whether it is a full licence, a learner’s permit, a temporary certificate or a replacement document.
  • If it was recently renewed, ask how the original date of entitlement can be demonstrated for the rental company’s experience requirement.

Send AMR the relevant details before you finalise the reservation. Ask what you must present at collection, rather than relying on a general country list or a photograph of a licence stored on your phone.

Licences issued in an EU country

The EU’s Your Europe guidance on driving licence validity explains that an EU-issued licence can be used in other EU countries. It must still be valid, and you should check its vehicle category and restrictions. The guidance also warns against relying on a provisional licence or certificate for driving in another country.

Recognition of the licence does not remove the company’s rental conditions. The driver still needs to meet the requirements for the selected car and provide the documents requested for the booking.

Non-EU licences: check official guidance and AMR’s terms

For a licence issued outside the EU, Your Europe directs visitors to the destination country’s authorities or their embassy or consulate. If you hold a licence from the United States, Canada, Australia or another non-EU country, check the official information for your particular document and circumstances. Do not assume that a rule for one country applies to another.

A useful specific example is the UK Government’s driving advice for Greece. It says that a UK photocard licence can be used to drive in Greece; holders of older paper licences may need to obtain a photocard or the appropriate IDP. The same advice notes that hire companies may impose stricter requirements, including an IDP.

AMR’s published Terms & Conditions state that licences from outside the EU must be international. This is a published company requirement, separate from legal recognition of a national licence. Ask AMR to confirm in writing which documents it requires for your licence before you complete the booking, even where your national licence is recognised for driving in Greece.

If you need an International Driving Permit

Check the required permit type and authorised issuing body through the relevant official authority before travelling. Ask which national documents must accompany it and make sure the documents cover the dates of your trip.

A website’s promise of an immediate digital translation is not enough to establish that the product will meet the requirements for your journey or rental. Check the issuer and document before paying. If you discover a missing document shortly before departure, speak to the issuing authority and AMR instead of assuming it can be replaced after arrival.

Digital documents, copies and renewals

The official Gov.gr Wallet FAQ explains that the app’s digital documents have equivalent legal validity to their paper counterparts for lawful use within Greece, but are not international travel documents. This concerns the official document, not an arbitrary photo or PDF.

Before travelling, confirm how your documents will be checked at collection. If your licence is being renewed, replaced or reported lost, resolve its recognition and the rental company’s acceptance before committing to the booking. Do not assume a temporary document can be used across borders simply because it was issued by an official authority.

AMR’s published age and experience requirements

AMR’s terms require at least two years of licence possession. They list minimum ages of 23 or 25 for the models specified on the page. These are company rental conditions, not a single legal driving age for every car in Greece. Confirm the criteria for the actual car you are requesting.

If another person will drive, tell AMR before the rental and confirm the documents and procedure needed to include that person in the agreement. Do not assume that travelling together authorises someone to drive.

Questions to resolve before paying

My licence expires during the trip. What should I do?

Arrange a valid licence for the whole hire period before booking. If renewal is pending or your dates change, ask the issuing authority and AMR what must be resolved before you travel. Do not rely on a promise that the rental can simply continue after expiry.

I am 22 and have held a licence for three years. Do I qualify?

You do not meet the minimum ages stated in AMR’s published terms. A valid licence and driving experience do not override that policy. Contact the company before paying, rather than assuming a young-driver surcharge makes any category available.

What confirmation should I keep?

Keep the agreed vehicle category, named drivers and document requirements with the booking confirmation. If AMR has clarified your particular licence in writing, retain that reply as well. The company’s acceptance and the official recognition of your documents remain separate checks.
